Colts put perfect 5-0 record on the line against 4-1 George Rogers Clark
By PrepSpin Sports
Friday night brings one of the more intriguing matchups of the young Kentucky high school football season to Nicholasville.
The 5-0 West Jessamine Colts will welcome the 4-1 George Rogers Clark Cardinals to West High Turf Field for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff, with both teams looking to make a statement.
West Jessamine enters the matchup riding a five-game winning streak after opening the season with wins over Green County, Wayne County, Lincoln County, Paul Laurence Dunbar and Lafayette. The Colts have outscored their opponents 185-31 through five games.
GRC, meanwhile, comes to Nicholasville at 4-1 after opening the season with four consecutive victories before falling to Woodford County 62-20 last Friday.
That sets up an important Friday night for both programs.
West Jessamine wants to keep its perfect season alive.
GRC wants to respond after its first loss.
And both teams have plenty of players capable of making a difference.
West Jessamine’s Young Offense Continues to Grow
Much of the attention surrounding West Jessamine has centered around sophomore quarterback Caleb Spann, who has taken over the Colts’ offense and helped lead the team through an impressive opening stretch.
But Spann has plenty of weapons around him.
One of the interesting storylines for the Colts this season has been the emergence of junior Drew Hardin.
Hardin, who wears No. 2, has converted from running back to wide receiver this season. The position change gives the Colts another athletic and versatile weapon in the passing game while giving Spann another target to work with.
But Hardin is far from the only weapon West Jessamine can put on the field.
Caleb Jones and Eli Scott have also emerged as major pieces of the Colts’ attack, giving West Jessamine additional playmakers who can put pressure on opposing defenses.
With Spann at quarterback, Hardin, Jones and Scott providing weapons around him, West Jessamine has developed an offense capable of attacking defenses in multiple ways.
That versatility could be especially important Friday night against a GRC team looking to rebound from its first loss.
The Colts’ success, however, doesn’t begin with the skill players.
It starts up front.
Junior Jude Felker is one of the anchors of the West Jessamine offensive and defensive lines. Along with players such as Grant Slone and Cameron Thorpe, Felker gives the Colts size and experience in the trenches.
That group will have a major assignment Friday night against a GRC team that has shown it can score in a hurry.
GRC Looking to Bounce Back
George Rogers Clark arrives in Nicholasville with a 4-1 record, having put together four consecutive victories to open the season before last week’s loss.
The Cardinals defeated Great Crossing, Huntington, Montgomery County and Henry Clay before Woodford County handed GRC its first loss of the season, 62-20, on September 18.
Now GRC has to regroup against another unbeaten opponent.
The Cardinals have a talented quarterback in Carter Muzic, along with playmakers on the outside who can make life difficult for opposing defenses.
Senior wide receiver Haddon Cecil is one of the players West Jessamine will need to keep an eye on, while Gunner Martin gives GRC another experienced receiving threat.
Up front, senior Eli Biddle provides size and experience for the Cardinals’ offensive line.
For GRC, getting the offense back into rhythm will be a major storyline Friday night.
Two Friends. Two Head Coaches. One First-Time Matchup.
Friday night’s game also brings a unique storyline to the sidelines.
West Jessamine head coach Scott Marsh and George Rogers Clark head coach Dane Damron aren’t strangers.
In fact, they’re best friends.
Their coaching careers have crossed paths through stops at Morehead, coaching in Florida and Boyd County, building a friendship that has lasted through years in the coaching profession.
But Friday night will be different.
For the first time ever, Marsh and Damron will stand on opposite sidelines as head coaches.
The friendship will remain, but once the game begins, each coach will be focused on his own team.
That adds another layer to an already intriguing matchup.
Marsh has a 5-0 West Jessamine team trying to remain perfect.
Damron brings a 4-1 GRC team looking to bounce back.
For one night, two longtime friends will be trying to outcoach one another.
The Matchup to Watch
There will be plenty of attention on the quarterbacks.
Spann for West Jessamine.
Muzic for GRC.
But the game could ultimately come down to the players surrounding them.
Can West Jessamine’s offensive line give Spann time?
Can Hardin make an impact after his move to wide receiver?
Can Jones and Scott continue to make big plays?
Can the Colts’ receivers make plays downfield?
And can West Jessamine’s defense contain a GRC offense that has already demonstrated its ability to put points on the board?
For GRC, the questions are just as important.
Can the Cardinals establish the run?
Can Muzic find Cecil, Martin and the rest of the receiving corps?
And can the Cardinals respond after suffering their first loss of the season?
Those questions will begin to get answered Friday night.
