RICHMOND, Ky. — Madison Central and Scott County battled through a defensive, hard-hitting opening quarter Friday night at Tomahawk Valley before lightning brought the game to an early conclusion.

Madison Central held on for a 7-3 victory, with the game being called due to lightning with 10:44 remaining in the second quarter. According to the official scoring summary, Madison Central was declared the winner based on the score at the time the game was stopped.

The matchup featured two teams that entered the night with strong records, as Scott County came in at 4-1 while Madison Central entered unbeaten at 5-0.

Scott County Strikes First

Scott County controlled much of the opening quarter and put together an impressive 11-play, 56-yard drive that consumed more than six minutes.

The Cardinals moved the ball primarily on the ground, with Skyler Way and Timmy Emongo providing the bulk of the yardage. Way broke off several key runs during the opening possession, while Emongo ripped off a 23-yard run that moved Scott County inside the Madison Central 10-yard line.

After the drive stalled, Logan Harris connected on a 35-yard field goal with 5:56 remaining in the first quarter, giving Scott County a 3-0 lead.

Kinley Answers Immediately

Madison Central needed only two plays to answer.

After a 57-yard kickoff return by Jeff Hairston set the Indians up at the Scott County 41-yard line, Corinthian Barnes picked up seven yards before Gavyn Kinley broke loose for a 34-yard touchdown run.

Kinley's touchdown came with 5:02 remaining in the first quarter, and C. Guilbault added the extra point to give Madison Central a 7-3 advantage.

Kinley finished the night with one carry for 34 yards and the game's only touchdown. Madison Central managed 70 yards on just six offensive plays, averaging 11.7 yards per play.

Scott County Threatens Again

Scott County continued to move the football following the touchdown and put together another drive that reached the Madison Central 33-yard line.

Way again provided the spark, including a 16-yard run and a 9-yard run that helped move the Cardinals into Madison Central territory. However, Scott County was unable to convert on fourth down, ending the possession.

Madison Central then began a drive that carried into the second quarter. The Indians moved from their own 38-yard line to the Scott County 38 before the lightning delay and eventual stoppage ended the contest.

Defense Controls the Night

The defensive numbers reflected the low-scoring nature of the game.

Scott County recorded six first downs, 74 rushing yards and 16 passing yards. Charlie Ellison completed one of three passes for 16 yards, with Keller Furnish making the lone reception.

Madison Central held Scott County to one completion on three attempts and recorded a sack by Colten Johnson, who finished with three total tackles, one sack and one tackle for loss. Carson Herbst and Liam Dailey each recorded four tackles for the Indians.

For Scott County, Keller Furnish and Elijah Farris each recorded two tackles, while Logan Harris and Asher Brewer added one apiece.

A Game Decided by Lightning

The contest officially lasted just one hour, with kickoff at 7:30 p.m. and the game ending at 8:30 p.m. Weather conditions were listed as partly cloudy with an 82-degree temperature and northeast winds at six miles per hour.

Madison Central's 7-3 advantage after the first quarter ultimately became the final score when lightning forced the officials to call the game with 10:44 remaining in the second quarter.

For Scott County, Way led the ground attack with 54 yards, while Emongo contributed 29. For Madison Central, Kinley's 34-yard touchdown run proved to be the decisive play of the night.

In a game where every possession mattered, Madison Central's quick response after Scott County's opening field goal provided the only touchdown — and, ultimately, the difference in a weather-shortened 7-3 victory.
