After more than a decade of covering high school sports for Lexington and Central Kentucky at the Lexington Herald-Leader, I got the call that my job was being eliminated in a sweeping round of layoffs by the McClatchy Company across its media properties on the morning of Sept. 10.
The news did not come as a shock during these troubling times for media companies in the age of AI. The Herald-Leader isn’t alone in its struggle to find an audience that pays the bills.
I’d been laid off at the H-L before in 2008. That was a lifetime and another whole career as a “newsman” ago.
I reinvented myself then. I’m not going to reinvent myself now.
Because I’m not done covering high school sports.
I’m pleased to announce that I’m joining PrepSpin.com as a content creator and editor for its new venture, PrepSpin.com/news, and as the host of the “PrepSpin Scoreboard Show” on YouTube and its other streaming outlets each Friday night for the rest of this fall football season.

As the Herald-Leader’s high school sports writer, I earned national recognition from the Associated Press Sports Editors Association with first place awards for my work in 2024 and 2025. I have kept my vote in the Kentucky High School Media Poll rankings for football and basketball and, this week, I join Kentucky Sports Radio’s panel of high school top 25 voters.
At PrepSpin, I intend to continue to cover Lexington and Central Kentucky teams with previews, roundups, features and guides just as I had before.
And I intend to continue to provide some of the most comprehensive statewide preseason packages for Kentucky boys and girls high school basketball and football.
I also want to highlight the dozens of content creators across the state who share our passion for high school sports both on the Scoreboard Show and PrepSpin.com/news.
The high school sports community is an integral and vibrant part of our commonwealth. It’s my hope to continue to serve that community for as long as I can.
