Bryan Station controls the first half

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Bryan Station took control early and relied on a physical running game to pull away from Tates Creek, defeating the Commodores 21-3 on Sept. 16 in Lexington.

The game was ultimately shortened by lightning, with play stopping after just one snap of the third quarter. But by then, Bryan Station had already built a three-score advantage behind a productive rushing attack and three rushing touchdowns.

Bryan Station entered the matchup at 2-3, while Tates Creek came in at 1-4. The victory moved the Defenders to 3-3 on the season, according to the official scoring summary.

Bryan Station wasted little time establishing its identity. The Defenders opened the game with a 14-play, 73-yard touchdown drive that consumed more than eight minutes. Jeremiah Turner finished the drive with a 6-yard touchdown run with 3:43 remaining in the first quarter. The extra point was missed, leaving Bryan Station with a 6-0 advantage.

Tates Creek answered with one of its best sustained drives of the night. The Commodores marched 55 yards on 10 plays and nearly found the end zone. Ace Davis connected with Nazir Sanford for 22 yards and DJ Carter for 10 yards during the possession, while Amanti Clay contributed several runs.

The drive stalled inside the Bryan Station 10-yard line, forcing Tates Creek to settle for a 26-yard field goal by Arseneo Love with 8:38 remaining in the second quarter. That kick cut the deficit to 6-3.

Defenders answer with back-to-back touchdowns

For a moment, Tates Creek had momentum. Bryan Station quickly took it back.

The Defenders went 68 yards on nine plays, with Turner breaking off an 18-yard run and later adding an 11-yard gain. Raymond Young also ripped off runs of 15 and 10 yards as Bryan Station consistently moved the chains.

The drive ended when Coleson Carpenter powered into the end zone from 2 yards out with four minutes remaining in the first half. Instead of kicking the extra point, Bryan Station kept the offense on the field and Jeremiah Turner converted the two-point attempt, pushing the lead to 14-3.

Then came another critical Tates Creek mistake. Davis' pass was intercepted by Marcellus Ashford, who returned it 55 yards to the Tates Creek 5-yard line. One play later, Brayden Payne took the ball five yards for a touchdown. Samuel Flores' extra point made it 21-3 with three minutes remaining before halftime.

The turnover proved particularly costly because it immediately gave Bryan Station a short field. The official statistics show the Defenders scored seven points off turnovers.

Tates Creek nearly answers before halftime

To its credit, Tates Creek didn't simply fold after falling behind by 18.

The Commodores got excellent field position when DJ Carter returned the ensuing kickoff 46 yards to the Bryan Station 46-yard line.

Tates Creek drove to the Bryan Station 6-yard line, but the possession ultimately ended without points. After reaching the red zone, the Commodores were unable to convert on fourth down, and Love's 23-yard field-goal attempt fell short as time expired.

That sent the teams into the locker room with Bryan Station holding a 21-3 lead.

Ground game tells the story

The biggest statistical difference came on the ground.

Bryan Station finished with 126 rushing yards on 19 attempts, averaging 6.6 yards per carry and scoring all three of its touchdowns on the ground.

Tates Creek managed just 1 net rushing yard on 10 attempts. The Commodores gained 18 yards on their runs but lost 17, leaving little room for the offense to consistently stay ahead of the chains.

Turner led the Defenders with 52 rushing yards on seven carries, averaging 7.4 yards per attempt and scoring the game's first touchdown. Young added 49 yards on seven carries, averaging seven yards per rush.

Carpenter finished with eight rushing yards and a touchdown, while Payne added his five-yard scoring run.

Carpenter completed 3 of 5 passes for 25 yards with no interceptions. For Tates Creek, Davis completed 6 of 10 passes for 60 yards, with no passing touchdowns and one interception. Carter led the Commodores with three receptions for 17 yards, while Sanford had the team's longest reception, a 22-yard catch.

Defense comes up big

Bryan Station's defense also played a major role in keeping Tates Creek out of the end zone.

The Defenders limited the Commodores to just 61 total yards — 60 through the air and one on the ground. Tates Creek managed only five first downs and converted just one of five third-down opportunities.

Jordan Haskins led Bryan Station with three tackles. Raymond Young, DeSean Smothers and Joel Ndayisaba each recorded a tackle for loss, and Ashford supplied the game's lone interception.

Tates Creek's defense was led by several players with two tackles apiece, including Gage Gillispie, Nazir Sanford, Camden Jackson, Greg Overstreet, Jabari Young and AJ Baldwin. Sanford also recorded a tackle for loss.

Lightning ends the night

After halftime, the teams returned to the field, but the second half lasted only one play.

Tates Creek received the opening kickoff and began at its own 28-yard line. Clay gained one yard on the first play of the third quarter before a lightning delay stopped the game.

No additional football was played. The official scorebook lists the final score as Bryan Station 21, Tates Creek 3, with the game ending after that single third-quarter play.

Final Numbers

Bryan Station finished with 151 total yards on 24 plays, compared with 61 yards on 20 plays for Tates Creek. The Defenders averaged 6.3 yards per offensive play, more than twice Tates Creek's 3.0-yard average.

Bryan Station converted its only fourth-down attempt and went 3-for-3 in the red zone, scoring touchdowns on all three trips. Tates Creek went 1-for-2 in the red zone, with its lone score coming on Love's field goal.

For Tates Creek, the night was a frustrating one offensively. The Commodores showed flashes through the passing game and twice moved deep into Bryan Station territory, but the combination of limited rushing production, the second-quarter interception and missed opportunities in the red zone prevented them from turning those possessions into touchdowns.

Bryan Station established the run, capitalized on its opportunities and built a lead before lightning brought the night to an early conclusion.

Final: Bryan Station 21, Tates Creek 3.
